Undercover: The Beginning

"cheat code!"

date: April 15, 2007

Press Alt and Print Screen, open Paint, then press Ctrl+V. :-)

Interesting idea, but it's been done before... it's not much more than a quiz game with a little twist. Easy to cheat in, too...

AtemiS Tracker V1

"how did you get the samples to load?"

submission: AtemiS Tracker V1
date: April 8, 2007

I've done an emulator in Flash myself, and what limited for a long time was the gfx capabilities (fixed in Flash8 with BitmapData).
I reckon you have been faced with a similar problem but for sound...
How did you get the samples to load? how do you change the sample properties (i.e. pitch)? Does AS3 support load of binary data, and has better manipulation abilities?
Anyways, great work on this, bravo!

Author's Response:

You will be able to see everything in a few weeks when I will release the library with support for .XM, .IT and .S3M :D

As for loading sound in flash 9, it is a bit tricky. Adobe release what it called ByteArray but you cannot simply load sound from it. What you can do however is load a SWF from that ByteArray, so to load a sound you created, you create a SWF with your sound playing in it. :)

I know my English is bad but I hope you understand what I meant ._.'

Thanks for the review !

BR's Climate Chaos

"wonderful"

submission: BR's Climate Chaos
date: January 1, 2007

This is a wonderful implementation of a Mode7 engine, put to use in an original context. The art and music are fantastic as well. This is such a great package! It's very inspiring, I've done mode7 as well but I'm very far from this. Good job!

I'm a Skatman! Collab

"Movie does a disservice to the music"

date: June 4, 2006

The Scatman song is great, but the movie does not do it justice. There's not enough things moving to it, and some bits felt like random animations with no relation to the song.
John Scatman was a guy who stuttered and decided to make music out of it. "Scat" is a jazz term in which the human voice are used as instrument playing sounds (beep boop etc). The song is about overcoming your hardships the same way the guy did (he was ashamed of his stuttering, but made a signing career out of it).

APICopter Beta 1

"Congrats for releasing it!"

submission: APICopter Beta 1
date: June 3, 2006

Good job, you've finally released your pure code game. It works beautifully! I like how you've added a perlin noise in the background (I <3 perlin). I'm impressed by your progress in a few months (from back when the API collab started), so definitely keep going at it!

Author's Response:

thanks a lot newsdee, and thanks for the AS help along the way

Fantasy-Korea-[Episode2]

"a masterpiece"

date: June 3, 2006

Not only this was great, but I think it was an excellent idea by the Korea tourism board. I wish you would submit your other works here as well for others to see (the Cherry Filter videos on your site are very fun!), but I'm not sure they will be fully appreciated by an US audience. Anyways looking forward to number three! Good luck in the world cup!

Defend Ur API

"Turned out great"

submission: Defend Ur API
date: May 12, 2006

It's a shame the collab didn't go through, however you have at least come up with this nice little game. I'm glad to see it submitted!

It's a shame that there are no sounds, however the filesize is great for the game it is. It turned out very well, and you can use this as a preloader game now. :-)

I have no doubts that you have learned some new AS techniques through this project, so the collab did have some productive outcomes after all. Keep up the good work!

"Nice to see the API dress-up completed!"

submission: R!SE
date: May 7, 2006

I remember you mentioning starting an API dress-up for the (now dead) API collab. And here it is, combined with a fun game. Congrats on another sweet pure code jewel.
The graphics must have taken forever to draw and integrate through APIT. I agree with your comment (somewhere, review response?) that API games will have a though time in scoring unless they get better graphics. I think we're not too far though. I only wish we could generate sounds as well..

Author's Response:

Yeah, that would be cool. Closest I've come is to use tiny snippets (microseconds) of sound (see: Chalice) and loop them to produce a certain pitch - it's quite possible to produce 8-bit-ish tunes for a very small filesize that way, but unfortunately not pure code

//Sub Command\\

"nice remake"

submission: //Sub Command\\
date: March 22, 2006

Nice remake of the classic sub sinking game you've got there. It catched my attention because I have one version of this in my emulator (search for "Flip8 Redux" here in NG, then select the game named "U-boat"). I liked the options to upgrade and the different enemies; it made the game very challenging in the later levels. There were a few bugs here and there (e.g. torpedo wouldn't dissapear) but I'm sure you can fix that in the next game. Some of the text in the upgrade screen was hard to read, too. However, the two are not major problems, the game remains enjoyable as it is. Good job!
